Youth Art Show Award Recipients — 2010

The Monroe Arts Alliance 2010 Youth Art Show is on display at the Monroe County Public Library from March 1-30. Over 100 entries from students in grades 5 through 12 were received.

"This year's entries are of very high quality," says Judith Bair, coordinator of the event. "The judges had a difficult time choosing among so many fine pieces. The criteria for awards were, as before, originality, use of the medium, composition and overall artistic quality. Where differences of opinion occurred, a point system was applied and totalled, the highest score receiving the award."

The judges – Jeanne Brenneman, Ted Davis and Holly Browne – met on Saturday, February 27th, and spent several hours reviewing the entries. They were unanimous in awarding Best of Show to Hannah Williford, Grade 5, Peterstown Middle School, for her charming painting, "Dolphins Underwater."

"An excellent handling of the medium," noted Brenneman, "and a beautiful likeness of dolphins." "Great realism and underwater color," commented Davis. "Super composition," said Browne. "Very impressive." Williford will receive a $35.00 prize along with her Best of Show ribbon and certificate.

There were a total of 30 awards, with five first place winners of $25.00, as follows:

Grades 5-6

Grades 7-8

Grades 9-12, Pen and Ink

Grades 9-12, Pencil

Grades 9-12, Painting

The Awards Ceremony and reception will take place on Sunday, March 14, at 3:00 pm at the Monroe County Public Library. "We encourage students and parents to attend and share in celebrating the talent of our young people," Bair said. There will be an opportunity between March 1 and 14 for the general public to vote for a People's Choice award, which will also be awarded at the reception. Light refreshments will be served, and the judges will be present to discuss with students their criteria for awards.

The Youth Art Show committee consists of Lucy Taylor, JMHS, Sharon Pitzer, Mountain View, Donna Spangler, Peterstown Middle School, Holly Browne, art teacher at Greenbrier Episcopal School, and Judith Bair of the Arts Alliance. Joan Menard provided display screens and the library staff was extremely helpful in preparing the show.

The winning entries will travel to the Peterstown Public Library for display from April 1 to April 30th.
