Free "Great Courses"
at the Monroe County Public Library
The Monroe Arts Alliance's mini-grant program and the Monroe County Public Library have teamed up to bring you several superb video courses on DVD, beginning in mid-March 2009. With occasional exceptions, most of these programs are part of the "Great Courses" series from The Teaching Company, and are presented by renowned and popular professors from top universities, with all of the supplemental visuals and graphics you would get in an actual classroom.
Each Thursday night from 7 to 9 pm, two 30-minute lectures are presented with time for discussion after each lecture.
Anyone interested may sign up at the library, or call either Doris McCurdy (304-772-3038) or Judith Bair (304-772-4568), or e-mail maa@gmail.com.
The first course, "Questions of Value" was presented in the Spring of 2009. "Museum Masterpieces: The Louvre" (12 lectures; six weeks) began May 7, 2009. "West Virginia: A Film History" was presented in August and September 2009, and "From Monet to Van Gogh" in the fall of 2009. "Classical Mythology" began in April 2010. "A Brief History of the World" (36 lectures; 18 weeks) will follow later.
The goal of this program is to gather people with mutual interests in the subject matter to learn in a relaxed environment and to exchange ideas in an informal way. Each series will be limited to ten participants. There will be repeat programs if interest warrants.
Don't miss this chance to exercise your mind and expand your outlook. Call or sign up today, and look forward to a string of lively Thursday evenings.
