Scholarship Awarded to Hayla Mann

The Monroe Arts Alliance has awarded a $500 scholarship to Hayla Mann of Union, WV, to continue study in the arts at the college or university of her choice.

Mann, who graduated from James Monroe High School in May, has been accepted to West Virginia Wesleyan College, and will begin classes August 20th. The scholarship award was prompted by Mann's high school art teacher, Lucy Taylor, who applied to the Arts Alliance Mini-Grant Program on behalf of her long-time student. She cited not only Hayla's talent in the visual arts but "her willingness to take on any project, her innovative way of thinking and her dependability and trustworthiness."

Mann, who also received a Dean's Scholarship from Wesleyan, hopes to pursue both the visual arts and dance at college. She studied dance with Julie Bryan of Union for eight years and also at Trillium in Lewisburg, WV, and would like someday to open her own studio in Monroe County. She is also exploring a career in art therapy, but "it's early to say for sure. I definitely plan on coming back to Monroe County," Mann says. "I love it here."

The Arts Alliance Mini-Grant Program accepts requests in amounts up to $500 for arts-related activities and initiatives from individuals or groups. The senior scholarship award in the arts is open to students of music, visual arts or creative writing, but must be requested by a teacher or mentor of the student. Awards are made based on the quality of the application and funds available. Find more information and application forms at on this website, or call 304-772-4568.
